Entries are by country, dependency, and territory. The United States has been further divided by state. Names of institutions are in English. References are in the language in which they were written. The majority of the citations should be available in a library somewhere in the United States. Obscure sources that may be difficult to obtain have been included because they are often the only citation. All editions of a title as well as older works are included because of their potential value to a researcher. This is the second volume of a comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It continued the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Volume two is a collection of notable descendants of the next eight generations of John and Anne Washington’s descendants, including such luminaries as General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin. Future volumes will trace generations eight through fifteen, making a total of over 63,000 descendants. Although structured in a genealogical format for the sake of clarity, this is no bare bones genealogy but a true family history with over 1,200 detailed biographical narratives. These in turn strive to convey the greatness of the family that produced not only The Father of His Country but many others, great and humble, who struggled to build that country. The Washingtons includes the time-honored John Wright line which in recent years has been challenged largely on the basis of DNA evidence. Volumes one and two form a set, with a cumulative bibliography appearing at the end of volume two.

Excerpt from The Story of Agnes Scott College, 1889-1939 The brochure herewith presented makes free use of the materials collected by Dr. Gaines, including much of the phrase'ology of the former Story, and it undertakes merely to bring' up to date the developments of the College in recent years. N o attempt is made to write a formal history of the institution or to give complete data re garding the topics which are mentioned. It is rather a very simple sketch of events which will be of interest primarily to the graduates and other former students of Agnes Scott at various stages of its growth. Fortunately the College has available the Minutes of the Board of of the Faculty, the various catalogues and bulletins, and other materials from which eventually may be written a complete history of the institution; but that will be a privilege for some other time and perhaps for some other person. It is'_ impossible in a brief sketch to give proper recognition and credit to all who have been influential in making the Agnes Scott which we now know. There is no lack of appreciation for what all have done. The College issues several bulletins that may be of special inter est to prospective patrons or students, including the catalogue, view books, information as to student activities, social regulations, and the like.
